Not only is one German state moving from Microsoft to LibreOffice, but the whole federal government is committing to move to open standards by 2027: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl…

just wish my university would let us submit assignments in .ODF format, as we can only really use Word... and as a Linux user that means Word Online, which is slow and clunky.

@toran Oh no! Ask your uni why they won't accept standardised formats, and force students to use specific software. It's the exact opposite of what unis should be doing. If they say "We use Microsoft Office/365", point out that Microsoft also supports ODF so they should at least accept documents in that format!
Als Antwort auf LibreOffice

I'll try, ta... they're heavily invested in the MS ecosystem, as we're given 365 accounts on sign up.

Didn't know that Word also opens .odf files, so will ask them about it. Ta! 🙂

Thanks. Can you also share a reference to the source document that contains this decision?
Als Antwort auf Bart Knubben

@bartknubben It's linked to in the blog post: "More information (in German) on this page."

Thank you in the interests of all, except the overpowering large corporations! ✌️ 🍀

is the "Standardisierungsboard" thats tasked with enacting this framework @FITKOfoederal?
Als Antwort auf LibreOffice

I will believe it after it is done.
Not before.

I really hope that as they make the move they are also donating to the Open Source alternatives they are using.

a new government will be formed in the following weeks.

I doubt they will stick to it. They are not the kind of people who don't listen to rich lobbyists.

Congratulations 🎉 Maybe little known: the German federal government was required to be able to process ODF since 2010 already: cio.bund.de/SharedDocs/downloa…

> Das bedeutet,
dass die Bundesverwaltung bis zum 01. Januar 2010 in der Lage sein wird,
Dokumente im Format ODF zu empfangen, zu bearbeiten, zu erstellen und zu
versenden.

(wasn't easy to get this into place)

Back to the roots.
Staroffice, the grandfather of Libre office, was born in Germany ~40 years ago. Despite several semi-successful conversion attempts, I hope this time the transformation will be permanent.

oh wow, I know that the Dutch gov is implementing opensource as well (using La Suite and OpenDesk) but MS's office suite is the biggest hurdle to replacing Office365. Maybe this will finally become an option? @opensource

@LibreOffice Public administration is great, but maybe you could start talking with the European PAtent Office and its German and other national counterpart? They are currently moving towards "XML" filing rather than "PDF" filing, but "XML" in their world is OOXML only. I would love having a reliable path to file patent applications in ODF format, this would enable my law firm to switch to LibreOffice. Currently, because the patent procedure requires reliable reproducibility of line breaks and page breaks, we are stuck with the software that natively generates OOXML.

CuNha hat dies geteilt.

Sorry, but unfortunately it's not quite that rosy. It's only a small federal state that is changing over. I could share the euphoria more if it were one of the big states in the south of Germany.
Unfortunately, the city of Munich switched back to Microsoft when they built their German office there 😒

I want to see some kind of documentary or interview on how this has changed their work and what they like and don't like about it.
Als Antwort auf LibreOffice

I hope to see real steps in this right direction of independence from corporations and a better and free experience for citizens

about time! we always said closed source is a glaring security issue, and here we are now.

wenn die deutschen Bundesbehörden wirklich bis 2027 den Wechsel zu #OpenSource vornehmen - wow. Das wäre Fortschritt
Als Antwort auf LibreOffice

Anybody wanna bet how long it takes until they make a U turn? My guess is: 6 months

I'd be surprised if the German #bundesregierung really will switch to open standards. The new conservative government will soon realise who is able to pay more.

The value of security research into LibreOffice is going to rise! :blobcatgooglytrash:

Good news! This fits well into ZenDiS' (Germany's center for digital sovereignity) current efforts to push "openDesk" (an open-source MS365 replacement product, in particular for authorities), which includes Collabora Office.
